Destin after Hurricane Isaias: beach conditions, what's open and travel info

Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin on the night of Friday, October 9, 2026. This page collects what officials have said so far and links you to the sources that update fastest. We will keep editing it as things change.

Short answer: Destin is recovering but not back to normal. Okaloosa County lifted evacuation orders for coastal Destin on October 11 and says travel has improved, but downed power lines, debris and non-working traffic lights remain. We have not found an official beach-condition report, so check the county beach safety page and posted flags the day you go, and contact your host before you travel.

Isaias reached Destin as a Category 2 hurricane and briefly peaked at Category 3 offshore. Reports from officials say most structures held up and that downed trees caused much of the damage and slowed recovery. Roads in Destin flooded on landfall night, and the storm shut Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport for a time. This is a developing situation, and everything below is what we found as of the date above.

What officials have said so far

Evacuations, roads and power

Okaloosa County lifted evacuation orders for Zones A and B on October 11. That covers Okaloosa Island and coastal parts of Destin, Fort Walton Beach and Niceville, and it includes visitors named in the earlier orders. The county reported more than 500 hazards, including downed trees and power lines and non-working signals, and asked people to be careful in neighborhoods. U.S. 98 was reported cleared early Saturday, with work continuing on other roads. Several rivers in the county were still rising, and officials warned people not to drive through standing or moving water. Use the county road closures map and the Okaloosa power outage tracker for current status.

Getting here and getting supplies

Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport reopened October 10, but flight schedules have changed, so confirm with your airline. The county reported Publix, Walmart and Aldi reopened in Destin and nearby towns. Water conservation was requested because many wells were running on generators, and Okaloosa Island's water and sewer service was affected, so ask your property manager about water in your building. Our getting to Destin guide covers airports and driving routes once conditions settle.

Destin beach conditions right now

We looked for an official post-storm beach report and did not find one, so we are not going to describe the sand or surf for you. What is reasonable to expect after a hurricane is rough surf and rip currents for days, debris and seaweed on the sand, and changes to dunes and access points. Some boardwalks and parking areas may be closed or damaged. For live information, use these:

When the beaches are open and back to normal, our Destin beaches guide covers where to go for parking, access and facilities.

If you have a trip booked

Call or message your host or property manager before anything else, and ask these specific questions. Does the building have power and water? Are the elevators, pool and parking working? Is the access road clear? Has the unit been inspected? Be sure to ask what they will do if conditions are not ready by your arrival date.

Then read your cancellation policy. Hurricane rules vary by host, platform and any travel insurance you bought, so we can't tell you what you are owed. Keep screenshots of your reservation and your messages. For Vrbo bookings, the help options in your Vrbo account are the place to start.

Planning a trip for later this fall or winter

A storm like this does not end the season. Once power, debris and services catch up, fall and winter are the quieter, cheaper stretch on this coast. Our best time to visit guide breaks that down by month, and our monthly rentals guide covers longer winter stays. If you are choosing between areas, the neighborhoods guide explains where each one sits. Miramar Beach and Sandestin are in Walton County, so check that county's emergency updates and your property manager for those areas.

Frequently asked questions

Is Destin open after Hurricane Isaias?

Mostly recovering, but not back to normal. Isaias made landfall near Destin on the night of October 9, 2026 as a Category 2 storm. Okaloosa County lifted evacuation orders for coastal zones, including Destin, on October 11 and said travel had improved, while warning about downed power lines, debris and non-working traffic lights. The airport reopened October 10, and Publix, Walmart and Aldi have reopened in the area. Conditions change daily, so check the Okaloosa County emergency page before you travel.

What are the beaches like in Destin right now?

We have not found an official beach-condition report since the storm, and we are not going to guess. Expect rough surf and possible rip currents for several days after a hurricane, plus debris and changes to the sand and dunes. Check the county beach safety page and the posted flags for current conditions, and follow lifeguard and flag guidance.

Should I cancel my Destin vacation?

That depends on your dates and your booking. For a trip within the next week or two, contact your host or property manager first and ask whether the unit has power and water and whether pools, parking and elevators are working. For later in the fall or winter, most of the Destin area is recovering, so waiting for updates is reasonable. Review the cancellation policy on your booking, and for Vrbo stays use the help options in your Vrbo account.

Can I get a refund for a Destin rental because of the hurricane?

It depends on your booking terms, your host's policy and any travel insurance you bought, so we can't promise a refund. Start with your host and the booking platform's weather or extenuating-circumstances policy, and keep screenshots of your reservation and messages.

Are Destin's beaches closed?

We could not confirm a county-wide beach closure or reopening notice. Okaloosa County's emergency page did not list beach conditions as of October 11 and points visitors to its beach safety page. Treat conditions as variable, watch for posted closures and flags, and check official sources the day you travel.

Is Miramar Beach affected too?

Miramar Beach and Sandestin sit just east of Destin in Walton County, and most of the reporting we found covers Okaloosa County. We did not find Walton-specific beach or damage reports, so check Walton County emergency management and your property manager directly for those areas.

Is it safe to visit Destin this fall?

Recovery is moving, and a storm like this does not mean the season is over, but timing matters. In the first days after landfall the focus is power restoration, debris removal and safe roads, which is a poor time to arrive. By mid to late fall, with services reopened, many visitors find Destin quieter and easier on the budget. Confirm your specific building and its amenities with the listing before you go.

Planning a later trip to Destin?

Compare stays for later this fall or winter, and check each listing's cancellation terms and current building status before you book.
