Getting to Destin: airports, routes & tips

Destin sits on Florida's Emerald Coast, halfway between two easy airports. Here's how to get there without the hassle, whether you're flying or driving.

The closest airports

Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is the closest, roughly 30 to 45 minutes from most Destin rentals. Allegiant has added a wave of new seasonal nonstop routes into VPS, so it's easier than ever to fly in from cities across the country.

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP), near Panama City, is about an hour east and often has more carriers and flight options. Compare fares between the two, since the drive difference is small.

Pensacola International (PNS) is another option, around an hour and a half west, worth checking if the fares are much better.

Driving in

Most visitors drive in along Interstate 10, then head south to the coast on Highway 331 or Highway 85, connecting to Scenic Highway 98 (Old 98), the main beachfront road through Destin and Miramar Beach. If you're coming from Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, or the Midwest, Destin is a very drivable weekend getaway.

Getting around once you're here

A car is the easiest way to get around Destin, especially if you're staying in a resort condo and want to reach restaurants, the harbor, and different beaches. Rideshare is available but can be limited in peak season. If you're staying on Holiday Isle near the HarborWalk, you can walk to a lot of dining and charters.

Tip: Book your rental car early for summer, the same way you'd book your condo. Beach-town car rentals sell out and spike in price during peak weeks. Once your travel dates are set, lock in your Destin rental too.

Where to stay once you land

Your drive time from the airport barely changes between neighborhoods, so pick based on the trip you want rather than the mileage. Staying west toward Holiday Isle and the harbor puts you closest to charters, dining, and the things to do side of town. Staying east in Miramar Beach means quieter sand and the big resort towers, most of the beachfront condos people book. Our Destin neighborhoods guide breaks down the tradeoffs, and if you're still deciding between towns, compare Destin and Fort Walton Beach or Destin and 30A.

Timing your arrival

Most Destin rentals check in mid-afternoon, and in summer nearly every unit turns over on the same Saturday or Sunday. That means Highway 98 crawls during the middle of the day on changeover weekends. A morning flight or an early drive gets you to the beach hours sooner, and shoulder-season trips skip the problem entirely.
