Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is the closest, roughly 30 to 45 minutes from most Destin rentals. Allegiant has added a wave of new seasonal nonstop routes into VPS, so it's easier than ever to fly in from cities across the country.
Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP), near Panama City, is about an hour east and often has more carriers and flight options. Compare fares between the two, since the drive difference is small.
Pensacola International (PNS) is another option, around an hour and a half west, worth checking if the fares are much better.
Most visitors drive in along Interstate 10, then head south to the coast on Highway 331 or Highway 85, connecting to Scenic Highway 98 (Old 98), the main beachfront road through Destin and Miramar Beach. If you're coming from Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, or the Midwest, Destin is a very drivable weekend getaway.

The thing nobody tells first-timers is that Destin is basically one long road with the Gulf on one side. Once you understand that road, getting around stops being confusing.
There are two roads called 98 running roughly parallel, and mixing them up is the single most common navigation mistake visitors make.

Destin traffic is real, and it's concentrated. Summer afternoons back up, and Saturdays and Sundays are worse because nearly every rental in town turns over on the same day. A five mile drive that takes ten minutes in October can take a lot longer in the middle of a July afternoon.
The workaround is simple: do your driving early. Grocery runs, beach trips to a different access, and harbor dinners all go smoother before mid-morning or after the dinner rush. If you're staying in Miramar Beach and planning harbor dinners every night, you'll spend real time in the car, which is worth factoring into which area you book.
Two bridges shape most Destin drives. The Marler Bridge carries Highway 98 over East Pass between Destin and Okaloosa Island heading west toward Fort Walton Beach, and it's the pinch point when traffic backs up on that side. That crossing is also the whole reason how far Fort Walton Beach is from Destin is a question worth asking before you book: it's only 10 to 12 miles, but the drive time swings wildly with the season. The Mid-Bay Bridge runs north across Choctawhatchee Bay toward Niceville and is a toll bridge, which is worth knowing if you're coming from VPS or heading inland. Check the current toll and payment method before you cross, since that changes.
If your rental is beachfront or has deeded access, parking is mostly a non-issue and you'll walk. If you're staying inland or want to try a different stretch of sand, plan on getting there early. Public beach access lots are limited and fill up on summer mornings, and Henderson Beach State Park charges an entry fee. Note that a lot of condo complexes issue a set number of parking passes per unit, so if you're arriving in two cars, confirm that with the listing before you book. Staying on Holiday Isle near HarborWalk puts you within walking distance of a lot of dining and charter boats, which is the closest thing Destin has to a walkable base. And if you're booking a big resort like Sandestin, on-site transport within the property covers a lot of your day-to-day movement. Outside of those, rideshare works but thins out in shoulder season and gets slow when everyone wants a ride at once.
Crab Island isn't reachable on foot. It's a shallow sandbar just north of the Marler Bridge, so you get there by renting a boat or pontoon, joining a shuttle, or booking a tour, all of which leave from the harbor area.
