Things to do in Destin, FL

Destin packs a lot into a small stretch of the Emerald Coast: world-class fishing, a shallow sandbar party at Crab Island, protected state-park beaches, and easy family attractions. Here's how locals and repeat visitors actually spend their days, plus where to stay so you're close to the good stuff.

Destin calls itself the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village," and the harbor still runs one of the largest charter fleets in the country. But the water is the real headline: an unusually clear, emerald-green Gulf over sand so white it squeaks. Base yourself well and most of this list is a short drive or a walk from your door.

On the water

Crab Island

A submerged sandbar just north of the Marler (Destin) Bridge where boats anchor in waist-deep water. In summer it fills with pontoons, floating food and drink vendors, and inflatables. Reach it by boat, pontoon rental, or a shuttle out of the harbor. Bring water shoes and an anchor if you're captaining your own.

The main event

Deep-sea & bay fishing

Destin Harbor is the launch point for everything from four-hour bottom-fishing trips to full-day offshore runs for snapper, grouper, and pelagics. First-timers and families do well with shorter half-day or bay trips. Book ahead in peak summer, and confirm what's included (rods, bait, license, cleaning) with the captain.

Family favorite

Dolphin cruises

Bottlenose dolphins are common right around the harbor and East Pass. Cruises range from fast catamaran trips to slower pontoon tours, many leaving from HarborWalk Village. Late afternoon and sunset departures are the most scenic.

Protected beach

Henderson Beach State Park

Over a mile of preserved Gulf shoreline with tall dunes, a nature trail, boardwalks, restrooms, and picnic pavilions. It's the quieter, less-developed alternative to the condo-lined public beaches, and there's a campground if you want to stay in the park.

Kids & teens

Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park

Destin's big water park, with slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool, plus an adventure side with mini-golf and go-karts. A reliable rainy-afternoon or beach-break option for families with school-age kids.

Evening out

HarborWalk Village & the Boardwalk

The Destin Harbor Boardwalk lines the water with restaurants, bars, ice cream, charter docks, and live music. It's the natural spot for a sunset dinner, and where most fishing and dolphin trips return with the day's catch.

Marine life

Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park

A short drive west in Fort Walton Beach, the Gulfarium has dolphin and sea lion shows, sharks, rays, and hands-on encounters. Easy to pair with a visit to Okaloosa Island's beaches.

Shopping

Destin Commons & Silver Sands

Destin Commons is an open-air mall with a movie theater and dining; Silver Sands in Miramar Beach is one of the largest designer outlet centers in the Southeast. Both are good rainy-day or too-hot-to-beach backups.

More ways to spend a day

  • Paddleboard or kayak the calm water around Norriego Point at the tip of Destin, a sheltered spot popular with families.
  • Snorkel the jetties at the East Pass, where rocks attract fish in clear, shallow water.
  • Play golf at Sandestin, Regatta Bay, or Kelly Plantation, several of the area's courses are minutes from the beach.
  • Rent a pontoon for a self-guided day on the bay and out to Crab Island.
  • Catch the sunset from James Lee Park or a Gulf-front balcony, the west-facing coast makes for reliable shows.

Booking links for fishing charters and activities are coming soon. In the meantime, most trips are easy to reserve directly through operators along the Destin Harbor Boardwalk.
